A Journey That Began in 1988
In 1988, Mira Borukhin opened a small retail travel agency in New York City, realizing her childhood dream of working with planes and exploring the world. Emigrating from Riga, Latvia, to the United States in the late '70s, and after completing her college education, Mira founded Downtown Travel. Today, it stands as one of the largest air consolidators in the United States and the sister company to AvantGarde Vacations.
9/11: Resilience in the Face of Adversity
During the September 11 attacks, Downtown Travel faced one of its most challenging times. Named after the downtown area where its first office and clients were located, the company's office was destroyed in the tragedy. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Downtown Travel resumed ticketing within days, even before the airlines could reopen their flights. “It’s one of my proudest Downtown Travel moments,” says Mira Borukhin.
Expanding Horizons: Holidays with Downtown
In 2015, Mira expanded the business by launching Holidays with Downtown (HWDT), a leisure travel brand rooted in Downtown Travel's legacy of success and industry expertise. For a decade, HWDT has delivered top-quality and value through a diverse range of experiential escorted tours, locally hosted itineraries, and flexible destination programs across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Under the leadership of Mira's son, Steven Borukhin, HWDT grew to feature over 30 curated vacation destinations, a dynamic Groups program, and exclusive international sporting event packages.
